- Diagnosis on root knot nematodes by using different methods. In consideration of the strong economic importance all over the world of these organisms, to date, Meloidogyne sp. is one of the most destructive nematodes and causes of important yield loss in many different crops worldwide. Nowadays, with the earth population growth, it is mandatory to increase the agricultural productivity in line with the increasing demand.
More than 10% of the world agricultural production is destroyed by phytoparasitic nematodes. These microscopic organisms have a very large economic impact on crops due to the reduction of the quantity and the quality of the productions. In order to improve yields, with the goal of reducing loss caused by these noxious organisms, it is necessary to produce good diagnosis results and at the same time, continue progressing for a good control of this pest, using technologies which have no negative impact on the environment.
Phytoparasitic nematodes are characterized by the presence of a stylet that is used for the penetration of the host plant tissue. Most species attack roots and other underground parts of plants, but some are able to feed on leaves and flowers.
Diagnosis is very important to: (1) Identify the nematode type(s); (2) estimate the population; (3) make decisions.
The diagnosis includes: the evaluation of the nematic charge and the identification of the genus of the main phytoparasitic nematodes.
Between the different methods used, the photo on the left shows a modified Baermann apparatus for the extraction of nematode larvae from the soil.
DISEASE INOCULUM SERVICE
In collaboration with the Ph.D. Juan Antonio Martinez (from the Italian Plant Protection Department, UPCT), Biotek Agriculture Italy can obtain inoculum of the most common plant diseases in European agriculture, to make artificial infestation of our fungicide efficacy trials on crops and seeds.
Inoculum can be provided also to your R&D department for your in-house trials. Also, for seed treatment trials we can provide inoculated seeds of cereals, corn or rice.
GROWING CHAMBER TRIALSTrials under controlled environmental conditions are sometimes necessary to obtain accurate supporting data of the efficacy of the experimental products. Temperature, humidity and light are controlled in growing chambers to simulate perfect conditions for plant growing and pest/disease development.In collaboration with the Plant Protection Department of the UPCT we can provide growing chamber trials for the development of your plant protection products and provide accurate data on products efficacy.For more details regarding the provided services* please contact:
